The summer break doesn't stop the passion: exploring the kingdom of mushrooms between woods and study

With the arrival of summer and the warmth enveloping our countryside and mountains, the operational heart of Naturnext.eu is also taking a well-deserved break. During this time, no paperwork will be processed, no shipments will leave, and we will not answer the phone. But be careful: this suspension does not at all mean a "void" of activity for those who love nature.

If our offices fall silent, the woods will speak louder. And what better time to immerse yourself in the study and observation of the most fascinating and mysterious kingdom on earth? That of mushrooms.

The call of the undergrowth: why August is the right month to study mushrooms

August is often considered a "slack" month for mycology. The spring primroses are now a memory and the golden autumn is still far away. Yet, for the attentive seeker and for the scholar, this hot and sultry month hides true pearls.

Summer species: hidden treasures among leaves and heat

While many think of mushrooms only in autumn, August offers prized and highly curious species. It is the season of the summer queen, the Black Porcini (Boletus aereus), which emerges in oak and chestnut woods after sudden thunderstorms. But it is also the month of choice for the magnificent Amanita caesarea (Caesar's Mushroom), with its orange color blending into the undergrowth, and for the countless species of Russulas and Milk-caps, which color the ground as if they were flowers.

Walking from wood to wood during this period means training your eye to notice details that we often overlook in autumn, with its abundance.

Our invitation is clear: take advantage of the closure for field training. No manual, however well-written, can replace direct experience under the canopy of trees.

The importance of habitat

Every forest tells a different story. A pine forest will not offer the same fruits as a beech forest. Walking during this period, invite your eyes to observe not only the mushroom, but the tree that hosts it, the moss that surrounds it, the sun exposure. This is the true study of the mycologist: reading the landscape.

The "journey" as a learning method

Moving from one wood to another, changing altitude and elevation, will allow you to understand how temperature and humidity influence fungal growth. A physical activity that becomes meditation and science. Take a notebook with you, take photographs, draw the gills and rings. During this forced break from work rhythms, slowness is your best ally for learning.

Reading and study suggestions for summer 2026

If the heat becomes too intense for walking, or if you want to relax in the evening after a day of hiking, our digital and physical libraries remain open (even if our offices are closed!). This is the ideal time to fill theoretical gaps.

The technical sheet to avoid being caught unprepared

Study the families. Take advantage of this month to learn, for example, the microscopic differences between species of the genus Agaricus or to understand the mechanisms of mycorrhizal symbiosis. When we reopen on September 1st, we will be happy to find you more experienced and ready for the great autumn season.

Safety first

August is also the month of "summer poisonings." Studying mushrooms also means knowing the poisonous and deadly ones, such as Amanita phalloides (which unfortunately also grow in summer) or Cortinarius. Take advantage of your free time to review first aid guidelines and consolidate the cardinal principle of our philosophy: never pick what you are not 100% sure of.
